QR code help
How can I tell whether a QR code is safe to scan?
You cannot tell from the pattern. Check the address your phone shows before you open it, look for stickers placed over a real code, and never enter a PIN, password or card details because a code asked you to. Scanning to receive money should never need your PIN.
Common causes
- Scammers print stickers and place them over real codes.
- Codes can lead to fake login or payment pages.
- Short links hide the real address until you open them.
How to fix it
- Read the address your phone shows. Be wary of misspelled brand names or odd domains.
- Check that the code is part of the printed material, not a loose sticker.
- Do not enter passwords, card details or a UPI PIN to receive money.
- When paying, confirm the recipient name shown in your payment app.
- If it looks wrong, do not open it. Report it to the business and to the platform.
How to prevent it
If you run a venue, inspect displayed codes regularly, laminate or frame them, and put a written web address beside each.
Frequently asked questions
Can a QR code give my phone a virus by scanning?
Scanning only reads the link. Risk comes from the page you open or what you enter there.
How do I report a harmful code?
Send the short link and a screenshot to the platform's grievance contact. On this site, see the Grievance page.
