QR code help
Why won't my coloured QR code scan?
Scanners read the difference between dark and light squares. Light squares on a dark background, pale colours, or a gradient or photo behind the code reduce that difference and can stop scans. Keep dark modules on a plain light background.
Common causes
- Squares are a pale colour such as yellow or light grey.
- The code is inverted, light on dark, which some scanners do not read.
- A gradient or photo sits behind or inside the code.
- Brand colours on both foreground and background are too close in brightness.
How to fix it
- Make the squares clearly darker than the background. Black or a very dark colour on white is safest.
- Remove gradients, textures and shadows from behind the code.
- Place the code on a solid light panel if it sits on a photo.
- Test any colour combination on several phones, not just yours.
How to prevent it
Treat colour as decoration, not information. If it has to scan every time, use plain dark-on-light, especially for payments.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my brand colours?
Yes, if the squares stay much darker than the background. Test on several phones.
Do inverted codes scan?
Many modern cameras read them, but some scanners do not. Avoid inversion for anything important.
