QR code help
Why won't my QR code scan on glossy paper, glass or curved packaging?
Reflections wash out squares and curves stretch the pattern. Use a matte finish, place the code on the flattest area, avoid seams and folds, and make it larger than you would on flat paper.
Common causes
- Glare from lights or windows reflects off glossy paper or laminate.
- Curvature on bottles or tubes distorts the squares.
- Seams, folds or edges split the pattern.
- Texture or embossing changes how light hits the squares.
How to fix it
- Choose a matte laminate or varnish.
- Put the code on the flattest part of the surface.
- Keep it away from seams, folds and edges.
- Increase the size to offset distortion.
- Test under the real lights and at the angle people will scan.
How to prevent it
Prototype on the real material. Packaging often needs a larger code than a flyer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a QR code on a window?
Yes, with matte vinyl placed to avoid glare, and a test from the real viewing position.
Does lamination matter?
Glossy laminate can reflect light. Matte is safer.
